A Little Background: an Extra for "Rasaki's Drums and the rich rhythms of Nigeria's Yorubá."
This 5-miinute photo essay (with narration) gives a little information about the life of drummer Rasaki Aladokun, subject of my documntary "Rasaki's Drums and the rich rhythms of Nigeria's Yorubá." It also gives some background on Yorubá history and culture. The Yorubá have been round for at least 1,000 years and possibly much longer. Among their finest achievements are the "Benin Bronzes" created in the 11th-14th centuries. And tens of thousands of Yorubá were enslaved and sent to North and South America where they have influenced many aspects of culture.

Here is the trailer for a short film we're working on about Afro-Peruvian percussion instruments as seen through the eyes of prize-winning percussionist Peta Robles. Both the trailer and the completed film are in English, and Spanish with English subtitles. Part was filmed in Peru and part in a studio in California. This will be part of a series called "Speaking of Rhythm." We hope to complete ...
Langar - cooking Thanksgiving (and other) dinners for 35,000+ people

A key belief of people who follow the Sikh religion is that you must share what you have, and one way to do that is to provide free food - langar - to anyone who comes to a Sikh gurdwarar (Sikh temple). During major disasters including things like covid, Sikhs also provide the langar at places like homeless shelters and hospitals - in boxes, if health considerations require it. Often, this mean...
The Artist in Society: Talking with Hershell West
Переглядів 31Рік тому
Hershell West, a black artist from the segregated south, has risen above the expectations of his family, friends, and society to become a painter and muralist. His career began in Florida, where he got his degrees in art, and then continued in California. He has work in both states and has, in addition, taught at-risk youth and been a pillar of the arts community where he lives. Now in semi-ret...
Arthur & Juti go for a walk (sortent pour se balader)

ENGLISH (pour FRANÇAIS, regardez en bas) Arthur, from France, lived in my house for about a year while he went to U.C. Berkeley to get his MA. My little dog, Juti, was crazy about him. Arthur left today (May 22, 2023) to go back to France, having completed his degree. I made this little video as a going-away present. My guess is that they will never meet again - which is sad, but they really en...

This is the first three minutes of a rough version of - my third try at an opening to the documentary. We haven't finished shooting yet but I know what I want and where to get it. It will probably take another year to completed the filming, then several more months to do all the editing. I expect the completed documentary to be done by the end of 2024. Wish me luck. AND - feel free to leave com...

This will be one of the scenes in our series "Speaking of Rhythm." I plan to do five of them, each one on a different rhythm/percussion tradition. I've completed one and this is the second (tentatively called "From Box to Cajón") , which I hope to finish within the next month or so. It's about Afro-Peruvian rhythms and features prize-winning percussionist Peta Robles and her uncle, the wonderfu...

Of Beauty & Deities - trailer (2023)

Here is the new, hopefully improved, trailer for my one-hour documentary, "Of Beauty & Deities: Music & Dance of India." The full one-hour documentary looks at the classical southern Indian dance and music form called "bharatanatyam" and in the process, tells us something about India's culture. The dance form, as the people we interview explain, comes out of the Hindu religion (although you no ...

Rasaki Aladokun, from a Yorubá drumming family of Nigeria (in West Africa), grew up following his father as a drummer for traditional religious festivities, community events, and entertainment. As a young man, he joined the group of King Sunny Adé, "King of Juju Music," and toured the world with him. Later, Rasaki settled down in Oakland, California (USA) where he continues to drum and is passi...
The Language of Dog

My three dogs illustrate some time-honored sayings. They are/were wonderful dogs. Sadly, two of them died this year but their memory lives on...and dogs really can be funny, as these three have been for me. Of course, my master leaper didn't leap as high as usual when I had the camera on, but that's par for the course, right?
Rasaki Aladokun & son Ayanbukola drum together

Rasaki Aladokun of Oakland, California, comes from a drumming family in Nigeria. He is Yorubá and is passing the tradition on to his children. A charming and talented musician, here he is with his youngest son, Ayabukoa - who not only is talented in his own right, but he has a wonderful smile! (FYI: for any filmmakers out there: I will color correct at a certain point, but just wanted to get it...

Lalo Izquierdo - dancer, choreographer, percussionist, folklorist of his Afro-Peruvian community, teacher and ardent preserver of his culture and his community's artistic expression - died on 30 July of this year (2022). In addition to his great talent and just as importantly (if not more so), he was a wonderful man, a man who was always laughing or smiling, who loved teaching both children and...
